Flutter Bug: Salmon Fly Dry Fly Tying Tutorial | The Ultimate Salmon Fly Dry

The Flutter Bug is a culmination of 40 years of tying and fishing Salmon Flies. Some new school as well as old school materials and techniques involved in this tutorial. Lets start with the hook. The Moonlit Togatta 610 hook is a perfect platform for large down wing dries. Light wire with a deep throat helps keep flies floating well and the longer point hold fish solid. For thread we like hot orange waxed Semper fly 6/0. SRF Poly Bodies have been in our arsenal since the 8o's when my Mom had a Macramé shop in our basement in Idaho Falls. Braided poly pro yarn floats very well and makes for a perfect extended body dry stonefly. Our new Solar Dubbing adds just the right amount of flash to the underside of the pattern as well as covers up lashing very well. Pseudo Grizzly our latest version of our popular Grizz Frizz matches the natural color of the Salmon flies wing to a T. This wing material is slightly stiffer than most poly yarns and does not "wad up" like many of the other brands. Most modern Salmon fly patterns are closed cell foam and some version of rubber legs for the body and legs. Those patterns do a good job of imitating the naturals but don't necessarily have much movement unless "twitched" or animated by the angler. SRF Hydro Hackle as a sub for rubber legs on many patterns solves the movement issue. Hydro Hackle breathes in the water and each fiber refracts light as is flows in the surface, helping convince fish they are real. Hydro Hackle is much easier to apply than mid body rubber legs. We finish the Flutter Bug with SRF Lazer Legs just cuz we can. Lazer legs are much more flexible than most silicon legs on the market. By adding legs to the front of the fly we balance out the pattern helping it ride wing up as well as adding the ability to "twitch" the fly to induce savage strikes. The Flutter bug has been producing amazing fish lately on the South Fork of the Snake. Fish gorge themselves when Salmon flies hatch! This blitz attracts numerous amounts of fishers to the rivers where hatches are taking place. With this in mind, the fish become quite Leary of many anglers offerings and tend to "Refuse" many modern foam bugs soon after the hatch gets rolling. The SRF Fluttering Stone was designed for those fish who have become educated to standard foam imitations. The fly can be dead drifted or twitched to produce strikes when others are being turned down. Give this one a try or create your own versions using SRF quality materials.
